 6. Faster progress to higher lamb survival rates
Management practices that improve lamb survival are numerous but centre upon the pregnancy status of the ewe and the way in which pregnant and lambing ewes are managed. Single-bearing ewes, twin-bearing ewes and maiden ewes need totally differing management regimes during pregnancy and lactation and in the period from weaning until the ewes are joined for the next time.
There are many different management strategies that can be brought to bear on improving the survival of new born lambs and this website is now, and will increasingly become, a major focal point for these strategies. Industry organisations like the MLA and AWI are turning their attention towards projects aimed at improving lamb survival rates. Information emerging from these efforts will be found in this website.
To access the technical pages of this website you must belong to the ALSS client list and have your ewes scanned by ALSS contractors. The technical pages contain important research findings relating to lamb survival and management practices that have been used by commercial producers in order to lift lamb survival rates. All of the technical material will provide a foundation from which faster progress to higher flock reproductive performance can be achieved in your own flock. Part of the effort directed towards improvements in your own flock will involve an invitation for you to participate in focus group sessions.
